【Author's words】
Mr. Qian Mu once expressed this view in the "Outline of National History": The citizens of a country should have a certain degree of warmth and respect for their country's history. I deeply believe this. However, simply mastering some historical knowledge is not enough to understand the characteristics of a nation. Instead, the cultural essence of the nation must be extracted from history.
In fact, beliefs shape civilization. Just as we cannot deny the influence of Catholicism on European civilization and the influence of Protestant Christianity on American civilization, we cannot deny the influence of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism on Chinese civilization. This is the key to understanding Chinese civilization, so this book spends a lot of space exploring the essence of the belief systems of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, including the analysis of some common misunderstandings.
Today, past beliefs are declining in all countries. People tend to use science to solve the relationship between man and nature, and use law to solve the relationship between man and man. In essence, this is the legacy of the Enlightenment, that is, man’s relationship with nature. The belief in one's own rationality believes that people can solve all problems with their own rationality, and even discover the truth of the universe, the mysteries of life, conquer nature and even live forever. At this time, the development of civilization has gone astray. Of course people should possess and promote rationality, but it must be rationality within the framework of faith. People need to remain humble toward God and maintain the morality prescribed by God. When faith in God is absent, civilization will inevitably fail and social chaos will ensue. In fact, we are already seeing its consequences unfold and spread.
Therefore, in addition to exploring the essence of Chinese civilization and the real reasons for its five thousand years of existence, this book also aims to use these discussions to find the focus of our efforts to revive Chinese civilization after the CCP’s devastating destruction of Chinese culture.
